Last Saturday Pascal Schrik, alderman of the City of Emmen, officially opened this unique pitch by playing a the first official soccer game with local talented minors. The field is intensively used by kids through out the year, which is exactly what Senbis was looking for as a test field. This way important feedback can be provided on the performance of this innovation.
The field is made of an in-soil biodegradable grass yarn, tufted in compostable woven and backed by a natural latex. This concept should avoid long term microplastic pollution in the environment and offer an extra end-of-life solution next to recycling, namely composting. The commercial name of this product is GreenBlade.
This GreenBlade pitch as been filled with the biodegradable infill from Senbis called GreenFill.
The R&D phase was financed by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and executed in cooperation with Ten Cate Grass, EdelGrass, Antea Sport and Sweco Nederland. The test field was finally realized with the support of the local sports club EHS’85 and the City of Emmen and the Province of Drenthe. All involved partners and sponsors were represented during the opening together with many active members of the soccer club.
Senbis wishes the club many more sportive years and will pay them regular visits to monitor the performance of the pitch.

Senbis opent werelds eerste biologisch afbreekbare kunstgrasveld bij EHS’85 in Emmen.
EHS’85 is de trotse eigenaar van het eerste biologisch afbreekbare kunstgrasveld in de wereld. Afgelopen zaterdag werd het testveld officieel geopend door wethouder van de Gemeente Emmen Pascal Schrik, middels het aftrappen van een wedstrijdje tussen lokale pupillen.
De unieke kunstgrasmat, luisterend naar de naam GreenBlade, is ontwikkeld door het op het GETEC terrein gevestigde Senbis, in samenwerking met haar partners Ten Cate Grass, EdelGrass, Antea Sport en Sweco. Senbis komt voort uit de voormalige R&D activiteiten van Akzo en is gespecialiseerd in het leveren van R&D-diensten en het ontwikkelen en produceren van duurzame producten uit biopolymeren.
Het testveld bij EHS’85 is het resultaat van een intensief onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingsproces, dat mede mogelijk is gemaakt door ondersteuning vanuit Sportinnovator en de Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (de laatste twee namens het Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport), provincie Drenthe en de gemeente Emmen. Het bestaat volledig uit composteerbare materialen en is ingevuld met GreenFill, de eveneens biologisch afbreekbare infillkorrel van Senbis. Deze constructie is daarmee hét antwoord op de micropastics-discussie rondom kunstgras.
De opening van het veld bij EHS’85 was in aanwezigheid van veel leden van de voetbalclub, bestuurders van gemeente en provincie, vertegenwoordigers van Sportinnovator, RVO en VWS, de betrokken ontwikkelingspartners en andere partijen uit de kunstgrassector.
